CHAPTER 20

ENZO

Forcing a laugh, I said louder than necessary for the benefit of the onlookers, “Let me show you where you can get cleaned up, sister.”

I squeezed her side and gave Bianca a warning look. She swallowed. “Thank you, brother.”

I ushered her out of the room. The moment we reached the empty entrance hall, she broke free and bolted for the door. My jacket slipped from her shoulders as she ran.

I easily caught up with her. Snatching her wrist, I pulled her into a concealed alcove, pinning her to the wall with my body. My forearms rested above her head, caging her in.

Her chest rose and fell with her heavy breath. The curled, prosecco-drenched tips of her hair clung to her partially exposed breasts. Thinking how she appeared before all those leering eyes, half-dressed like this, made me furious all over again. “Who the fuck is he, Bianca? I want an answer this time.”

She turned her head to the side. “None of your—”

I kicked open the doors and shoved her inside before closing and locking them behind me. I pulled the key from the door and crossed to the mahogany wardrobe, setting it on top, out of her reach.

She stood facing me.

Neither of us said a word for several moments.

You could hear the muffled din of music and laughter from the party below. It gave the dim bedroom a strange, ethereal quality, as if both of us were existing on another plane than the rest of the world.

I pulled at the bow tie at my throat. I then unbuttoned my collar. I twisted off one cuff link, then the second as I crossed to the fireplace. I put the cuff links on the mantel and lifted the lid on the nearby black and gold enameled box.

Selecting one long match, I went down on my haunches, struck the match against the brick, and held the flame to the sticks artfully arranged around the central log until they caught fire.

Tossing the match into the fire, I rose and turned to face Bianca.

The entire time she had just stood there in the center of the room, watching me like a rabbit staring at a wolf.

I crossed my arms over my chest and leaned against the mantle. I took a deep breath, choosing my words carefully. “You have until the count of three
